Single-card spread

tarot · spread

A single card is the smallest complete reading: one question, one position, one answer to interpret. It is the easiest way to learn card meanings because nothing is hidden behind a spread structure — if the reading does not land, the card (or the question) is the only thing to check.

The standard position is "right now": what deserves attention about this situation at this moment. Not "what will happen". A one-card answer describes a state, and states can be acted on.

Variants worth trying:

  • Keep it / drop it — one card, then read it as a reason to continue or to stop. Useful for a decision you have already made but not admitted.
  • Focus for the week — the same card revisited daily. If it reads differently on Thursday than it did on Monday, that difference is the actual information.
  • Before and after — draw one card before a conversation and one after. Two cards, two readings, compared later.

Two failure modes are common. The first is treating the card as a prediction; a single card has no room to state conditions, so the answer sounds absolute when it is not. The second is redrawing until a card appears that feels acceptable. If the first card was disappointing, that reaction is the thing to read.
